Oh, No He Didnt! Plus-Size Models A Joke?
Here we go again. Another fashion designer felt it necessary to diss plus-size models, calling them “a joke” on the runway next to their size zero to six counterparts.
In a recent interview, British fashion designer Julien MacDonald dismissed the current interest in plus-size models, insisting that "a catwalk model is a size six to eight" and when referring to the reality TV show Britain’s Next Top Model which he judges, said of the competition: "This is a serious show. You can't have a plus-size girl winning – it makes it a joke."
Ahem.
I understand that as a designer, MacDonald is an expert in women’s fashion. But, as a woman who has worn a “catwalk size 6” to a full-figured 20 and every size in between…at least twice, I think I have some insight that makes me an expert, too.
Please allow me to opine:
Although the majority of American women wear above a size 12, a great number of fashion collections, runway shows and magazine editorials idealize women who are much smaller. Unlike most women who face reality in the mirror every day, realism seems to conveniently escape the grasp of the likes of MacDonald.
Designers readily admit their clothes look better on thinner models. But let’s face it, drawing a stick figure is a lot easier than drawing a 3 dimensional figure and rolling a piece of clay between your palms to produce a cylindrical shape is much easier than molding clay into a form with height, width and depth.
Chanel once said, “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions” and I think Coco was right. Some figures are more difficult than others to keep in proportion and some measurements require extra time and skill to reflect their beauty.
I’d like to see designers who, unlike McDonald and his ilk, embrace the challenge of designing for various sizes of women and with their success, I believe everyday women like myself will have the last laugh.

Aren't the fashions seen on the catwalk more about what fabrics and impressions we're going to be seeing in the new season? But I agree,, I would love to see more plus size models showing off what we all want to be wearing,,, on the catwalks and in the catalogs. It has taken long enough for me to accept my plus size,, I don't need another designer telling me I'm not worth it!

I always question who really wears those designs seen on the catwalk. I know my size and as long as I am healthy I think I am just fine. I don't give much thought to what people like McDonald say as long as there are stores like Lane Bryant he and the like are of no significance to me or my size.

We, as the FAB AND THICK SOCIETY must understand that we are worth more then those mere words on paper. When you have to p put others down to make yourself feel special then you must not be all that...Don't, believe the hype the 0-6 sizes and fashion industries have taken a major hit....We are the next generation of industry moguels who are going to take over and leave them all in the dust......As,, long as there is a boutique to cater to us then we'll always find a way to strive forward in greatness. Just remember ladies, he might just secretly be a chubby chaser in the dark and fashion expert in the day time......Either way, we were all created to us our beings to mold and shape this earth. CHI!

I am not sure which is worse, a designer that does not recognize the plus size market or a designer who designs for size 6 to 8 and then simply makes larger sizes of the same style. Plus size women have curves that are not the same as smaller women. You cannot double or triple a dress size the way you would double or triple a recipe. We need designers who design for us, they'd make a fortune!

it really makes me sick to think that in this day and age that designers like McDonald still have their heads in the sand about us curvy women. Even when I was a small size I was never a 0 or six due to my hips. I am all for the plus size women becaus we can be just as sexy as a thinner woman.

It is unbelievable that a person with such experience in fashion is yet so ignorant to make such comments. Not sure what planet he is from... but evidently he needs to look around and see what REAL women look like.

The worst part is going to one of those stores and BEHOLD you do find one in a 3x to fit you and then it looks like the PACKAGE that the size 2 came in. Not nearly as pretty or attention to detail.

Myabe the designer just can't think outside the box for making clothes, so he blames his lack of talent on us curvy women..lol. You mean to tell that other sizes..exist?! Gahh! I never learned to count past 10! My career is over!

Coco Chanel was wise!!! The peer pressure is bad enough w/o some a-hole judging us women. Women come in all sizes. Plus.. it says a majority of American women are over a size 12. You have to remember also, that alot of women have weight problems cuz of health, so don't be so quick to judge!! Also, those skinny models are just a bag of bones, what's so attractive about that??
